Appliances

Most appliance companies are now making energy efficient models that can use up to half the electricity of their conventional counterparts.  Utilizing the latest technology can save you money over the lifetime of the appliance by using less energy and water.  Efficient appliances are usually more expensive, yet they often have a short payback time due to the amount of energy saved annually, and the tax credits and cash rebates available in Oregon for energy efficient appliances and vehicles.

When searching for appliances it is important to compare the energy consumption of various models by looking for EnergyGuide and ENERGY STAR labels, and prepare before you shop to ensure purchase of the appropriate appliance for your household.

Prepare Before Shopping Around

Besides comparing the energy usage of appliances, you can also ask specific questions to make sure you get the information you need to make an informed decision before purchasing an energy efficient appliance.  Here are a few questions to get started:

What makes this model more energy efficient than similar models?

What do I need to know about this appliance in order to use it most effectively? (ie: allow 2” air flow all around refrigerators)

What is the energy rating? (check ENERGY GUIDE labels)  If buying a contractor supplied appliance, specify an estimated annual energy usage you would like to have.

Does this appliance qualify for an ENERGY STAR rating?
