 Copper Cricket Photo 1989

Explore Oregon's solar roots with Eldon Haines, inventor of the Copper Cricket solar water heating system. Learn about the development and history of the Copper Cricket and solar water heating in Oregon.  Plus, Solar Oregon Executive Director Claire Carlson will give a brief policy update.

You’ve heard that the Copper Cricket pumps hot antifreeze down from rooftop to heat exchanger without electricity or moving parts – but how?

You’ve heard that we manufactured several thousand Copper Crickets – but what is the Copper Dragon?

You’ve heard we went bankrupt in 1995 – well, you’re right.  Maybe there were important lessons in that bankruptcy – right again.

Come hear the story and join the conversation.  A couple of old Cricket Cronies may come, too.

 About the Speaker:

Trained in chemistry, physics, and geology, Eldon Haines has taught at Purdue, Caltech, and Cal State Fullerton. Haines also conducted planetary science at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory during the 60s and 70s, still consults for NASA today.  During the late 70s and 80s, Haines did R&D for the Copper Cricket, and began manufacturing it in 1987.

Eldon Haines is also a Solar Oregon Solar Ambassador and proud owner of the Rose House which includes a 3.4KW array and of course, a Copper Cricket solar water heater.
