Federal energy officials recently awarded Bend-based Advanced Energy Industries Solar Energy Business Unit $3.1 million and SolarWold of Hillsboro $4.6 million for their ongoing research to better integrate solar-power systems with utilities.

The research is part of the U.S. Energy Department’s Solar Energy Grid Integration System program, started in 2008. The Energy Department announced the award — part of $145 million in funding for work in advanced solar technologies — Sept. 1.

Under the program, the federal government, private companies, universities and utilities joined together to develop various ways to improve the integration of solar power into the electrical grid.
