A Keizer church is set to benefit from a program installing free solar panels on rooftops in exchange for a portion of the energy produced.

Keizer Christian Church on Wheatland Road is adding to its southern-facing roof. The program the church has joined allows the panels to be installed at no up-front cost to the church.

“They’re renting our roof as a place to put them,” said Pastor Bob Arnold.

The church allows panels to be installed, then splits the energy savings with a Portland General Electric solar program, said Troy Costales, the church treasurer.

“They end up recouping their costs for the install and equipment purchase” through realized energy savings, Costales said.

He said the church would earn about $100 month that goes back to the church via an energy credit.

“We’re participating in clean energy, lowering utility bills and maybe we get some money to help us with repairs around the church,” Arnold said. “It all seemed like a win-win.”

Costales said the church takes steps like recycling for fundraising to conserve natural resources, and said the move to install panels was a natural step in that direction.

“It’s just furthering our footprint in the community as a sustainable organization and a good partner for Keizer,” Costales said.

“Taking care of the good earth that the good Lord has given us is a fundamental part of our calling as Christians,” Arnold added.
