Hundreds of thousands of Americans are expected to join in a nation-wide social media ‘shout out for solar’ campaign on Friday, January 24, to highlight the low carbon energy’s explosive growth in 2013, which has provided economic growth and jobs for the US.
Tomorrow, American businesses, environmental groups and the public will join forces to share their support of the country's rapidly-growing solar energy industry, in an online event organized by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA).
It is estimated that the US now has 13 gigawatts of installed solar capacity, which is enough to power 2 million homes. There are also currently 120,000 Americans employed by the US solar industry, which has now caught up with Germany, China and Japan as a global leader in solar. Part of this explosive growth can be attributed to the fact that the average price of a solar system has dropped a huge 50% since 2010.
Shout Out for Solar Day aims to celebrate this soaring growth, and marks SEIA’s 40th birthday as well as the launch of SEIA’s campaign “America Supports Solar”.
“Millions of people around the world are passionate about solar energy and the enormous opportunities it provides for the future,” said Rhone Resch, SEIA president and CEO. “This event will help showcase that excitement. Our industry has created thousands of new American jobs, saved money for consumers, boosted the economy and helped reduce pollution. That’s a success story worth shouting from every rooftop in America. […] Solar not only provides clean, reliable and affordable energy right now, it also provides our best hope for the future.” He added: “On Friday, we encourage everyone to #GoSolar.”
Jim Walker, International Programmes and Strategy Director, The Climate Group, said: “Shout Out for Solar Day has come at a critical moment for the United States. Solar energy is one of the fastest growing industries in America, where the share of global solar installations hit 13% in 2013, a 30-year high that will continue to boost the US economy and create jobs. Solar makes sense. The technology is ready, the market is ready, now we just need to spread #GoSolar with a mass audience to accelerate adoption of this low carbon energy and help secure a cleaner, better, more prosperous future for America.”
To take part in the event yourself, you just need to edit and schedule a #GoSolar social media post like this one before 12.30pm tonight.
