Solar Oregon’s 5th Annual Goal Net Zero Tour Update

Homeowner Corey Omey talks to Goal Net Zero Tour attendees

By Linda Barnes, Solar Oregon Board Member and Goal Net Zero Committee Member

You should have been there! 2 bus loads of zero net energy enthusiasts toured 5 different goal net zero homes on a wonderful spring day (no rain). The May 5th event started at the inspiring June Key Delta Community Center where we were given a tour of the soon to be LEED Platinum building. The morning tour included 2 new Passive House homes and one ambitious remodel. The afternoon tour gave us all a chance to see a bucolic home in the countryside and a home remodel with a long history of experimentation. Our tours were guided by a host of knowledgeable homeowners, architects, and contractors.

Our attendees were informed and inspired to comment:

“It is not easy to visualize costs, benefits, and construction strategies all at the same time. This tour does that!”

“An energy profile brochure for each tour is a brilliant idea!”

“This (tour) experience has my wife and I discussing all of our home purchase options using the criteria from the tour!”

“I’m always interested in the new products that I see every year on Solar Oregon’s tours! You are such a great resource!”

Lunch included a discussion of some of the trends we have seen over the past 5 years in the technologies and strategies used in the homes.

We were very pleased to have Umpqua Bank as the title sponsor for the tour this year and the support of several contractors, solar installers, and architects. Click here for a complete list of our supporters.

This year’s tour was started with a call for homes. Compared to our first goal net zero tour, we now have people begging to be on the tour versus trying hard to find homes for the tour!

What will we do next year?

More and better!

This was the first year we had a proven (predicted by modeling and on track with a half-year's data) energy producer. That is even better than goal net zero.
