This is a great year as 14 communities from all over Oregon join the more than 3200 communities from across the country in presenting tours of innovative green and solar buildings! This is all happening in concert with the 15th annual American Solar Energy Society (ASES) National Solar Tour. Most of these tours occur in September and October and many of them coincide with the official tour date of Saturday, October 2nd.
The ASES National Solar Tour is the world's largest grassroots solar event. This event allows attendees to see how they can use solar energy, energy efficiency, and other sustainable technologies to reduce monthly utility bills and help tackle climate change. More than 160,000 participants will visit over 5,500 buildings during the 637 solar tours registered throughout 47 states http://nationalsolartour.org/about-tour/about-solar-tour.
NOW IS THE TIME
"After decades of development, solar energy solutions have moved into the mainstream," says National Solar Tour Manager Richard Burns. "Solar prices are 30%-40% lower than we saw two years ago. State and federal incentives are the richest we've seen, and an evolving consciousness surrounding how solar cuts energy costs, creates green jobs and improves property values is emerging. From Main Street to rural retreats, the National Solar Tour is changing how everyday people view their energy choices. It's a catalyst that's accelerating the use of solar energy and energy-efficient practices across America " http://nationalsolartour.org/about-tour/about-solar-tour.
2010 Oregon Green and Solar Tour organizers have put together an exceptional collection of homes and businesses for Oregonians to study and build upon. Each tour reflects the unique interests of the community, yet all share a common goal: to educate the public about green and solar strategies. This year's tour is sponsored by Energy Trust of Oregon and Solar World.
WELCOME TO PENDLETON & EASTERN OREGON
The 2010 Oregon Green and Solar Tour welcomes Pendleton & Eastern Oregon into the growing number of communities interested in showing off their leadership in green and solar technology.
The inaugural Eastern Oregon Solar Fair (June 4-6) was a great success! Over 80 people came for the workshops and vendor fair, as well as the green and solar open houses. In Pendleton, a very successful Solarize program has led to the installation of over 60 solar systems on area homes. The Pendleton Solar Tour will take place on Saturday October 2nd, timed to coincide with the Solar Now! University event, a conference that provides local solar champions the technical education and background needed to manage and coordinate solar educational and outreach programs in their communities.
The Oregon Green and Solar Tour presents attendees with the opportunity to chat with homeowners and contractors about healthy building materials, alternative construction techniques, affordable housing, LEED, Passive House and Net Zero design standards, passive solar design, energy efficiency and conservation, daylighting, geoexchange systems, ecoroofs, rainwater harvesting, natural landscaping, and of course solar energy systems. Participants have to opportunity to learn about all of these sustainable technologies as well as the financial incentive programs to implement them.
A big thanks to all of this year's organizers, sponsors and attendees. Let's all get out to our local tour, pick up some great ideas to implement in our homes and businesses, and make the 2010 Oregon Green and Solar Tour the most productive ever!
