SUMMARY:Solar Showcase: Wynne Watts Commons
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a panel discussion and tour of Albertina Kerr’s new net-zero inclusive housing development\, Wynne Watts Commons! \nAlbertina Kerr is a local nonprofit that “empowers people with intellectual and developmental disabilities\, mental health challenges\, and other social barriers to lead self-determined lives and reach their full potential.” \nAs part of this mission\, Kerr has recently opened Wynne Watts Commons\, which offers 150 affordable units\, 30 of which are universally accessible. On top of creating accessible and affordable housing for the residents of Gresham\, Oregon’s Wilkes East Neighborhood\, Wynne Watts is also sustainable! The solar panels on the roof of the complex provide enough electricity to make this building net-zero. \nThis is a great opportunity to learn more about how Albertina Kerr was able to develop such an innovative project. RVSP to reserve your spot! \nThis event is possible thanks to the generous support of Energy Trust of Oregon!

SUMMARY:Green Series: Utility Scale Solar
DESCRIPTION:Solar Oregon is presenting a Green Energy series – free talks for those interested in learning more about the technologies and design of zero energy buildings. Solar Oregon is a non-profit educational organization leading the way to a clean energy future. These one-hour seminars will explore solar\, energy storage\, and energy-efficient equipment and design. Envisioned as a follow-up to Solar Oregon’s popular Go Zero home tours\, these online talks will encourage a deeper dive into the technology and allow for Q+A discussion contrasting options to aid in decision making. Future talks include: Zero Energy Design\, Battery Storage Systems\, DIY PV Systems\, Heat Pump and other Water Heaters\, and Utility-Scale Storage. \nAll talks will be online\, the first Saturday morning of each month\, starting November 5\, 2022 at 10 AM. \nAll webinars will be recorded and included on Solar Oregon’s YouTube channel. \nhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCN9no-FxCRHnICdU-tbb8Eg/featured \nGeneral Description of Seminar #4\, Utility Scale Solar: \nThe fourth talk in our Green Energy series will cover The History and Future of Utility Scale Solar. \nSpeaker Bio: \nEdward Louie works as a Senior Associate Energy Efficiency Engineer at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in the building systems and technology integration group on research projects related to heat pumps\, heat pump water heaters\, high-performance windows\, and remote quality assurance via contractors taking photos of critical details and reporting test results. \nPacific Northwest National Laboratory is a leading center for scientific discovery in chemistry\, data analytics\, and Earth science\, and for technological innovation in sustainable energy and national security. \nBefore joining PNNL\, Edward worked as a residential rater/verifier/inspector for three above-code energy efficiency programs in the greater Portland\, OR\, and SW Washington area. Outside of work\, Edward has been working on building a super energy-efficient off-grid all-electric tiny house on a trailer to gain first-hand construction skills and experiences with building and executing high-performance envelopes\, installing solar PV and batteries\, and more. When complete Edward will live in the tiny house to test whether it is possible to live off-grid with the designed energy systems. \nEdward is passionate about residential energy efficiency technologies\, building assemblies\, and housing typologies. \nThis event is free and open to everyone. \nRSVP for a link and call-in number to join the webinar.

SUMMARY:What's Happening in Solar Recycling?
DESCRIPTION:Over the past decade\, solar panel installations have grown exponentially. Because solar modules can last upwards of 25 years\, the question of recycling has been pushed to the back burner. This is beginning to change\, as the end-of-life for the first wave of solar panels approaches. In fact\, the International Renewable Energy Association estimates there will be 80 million metric tons of PV waste by 2050 globally. That’s a lot of waste to manage! \nThere are solutions\, however\, and our panelists have key insight into what they are. Come join us on December 13th to hear from: \nDustin Mulvaney – Professor of Environmental Studies at San Jose State University and author of Solar Power: Innovation\, Sustainability\, and Environmental Justice. \nRobert Nicolson – Manager of PV Recycling at the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). \nChris Regis – Owner of Green Century Electronic Recycling\, a SEIA PV Recycling Partner. \nRSVP here. This free educational event is made possible by generous support from the Energy Trust of Oregon. Thank you!

SUMMARY:Solar Energy Showcase: New Day School
DESCRIPTION:The Kishalay building at New Day School in inner Southest Portland is an ultra-energy efficient\, healthy space where preschoolers can learn and grow. Thanks to significant energy upgrades and a photovoltaic array generating an annual 45 kW\, it’s also Oregon’s first solar-powered Zero Energy preschool. This comprehensive whole-building renovation designed and built by Green Hammer reflects the school’s Neo-Humanist philosophy\, which aims to help children see interconnections and develop deep love and respect for all. \nJoin Solar Oregon at 6 PM on Tuesday\, June 28 for an on-site panel discussion with the designers of New Day School’s transformation.
