But what does a truly sustainable city look like? The Living Building challenge is a holistic\, rigorous certification that takes a broader perspective than many other green building certifications. After four years of hard work\, a collaborative project team led by PAE\, Edlen & Co.\, ZGF Architects\, and Walsh Construction has completed an innovative urban office building: the PAE Living Building. This site offers a visionary model for the future of sustainability. \nJoin Solar Oregon at 5 PM on March 16 for an on-site panel discussion of this first-of-its-kind facility. We’ll hear from four members of the project team\, who will share the stories of what makes this building special and the unique challenges that they encountered. Afterward\, you’ll have the opportunity to peek at the “brains” of the building–sustainable tech geeks won’t want to miss this. \nSpace is limited\, so make sure to RSVP early for this free educational event. Carly earned a Master of Real Estate Development from Portland State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Business from Walla Walla University. \nEd Sloop\, Chief Estimator\, Walsh Construction Co. — Ed Sloop is Chief Estimator and a Senior Project Manager for Walsh Construction Co. with over 25 years of experience in the construction industry. He has been key in the estimating\, system analysis\, and value engineering of all of WALSH’s projects in Oregon. Ed’s combined career experience includes over 500 projects consisting of many structural systems and programs. He has also worked with various green building rating systems such as Living Building\, LEED and Earth Advantage and project sizes ranging from small $125k tenant improvements’ up to $185M with private\, public and P3 funding. Ed holds an MEM in Engineering Management from George Washington University and a BS in Mathematics from the US Naval Academy. \nMilena Di Tomaso\, Principal\, ZGF Architects — Milena believes in enjoying the journey. For her\, a project too large or complex does not exist. From highly technical national projects with strict sustainability requirements to international embassies\, she appreciates the challenge that comes with program diversity. SUMMARY:Solar Lessons from Pendleton\, OR
DESCRIPTION:Pendleton\, OR is a small city that packs a big punch when it comes to solar and energy efficiency. Since he first began planning for the installation of solar on a municipal water filtration plant in 2006\, Pendleton Public Works Director Bob Patterson has led the implementation of dozens of innovative energy projects. His work and the work of other dedicated city staff has culminated in over 7 MW of solar energy; an innovative hydroelectric generator attached to an Aquifer Storage and Recovery system; and widespread consumer adoption of solar and energy efficiency–all this in a city with a population of 17\,000. Speakers include: \nBob Patterson – Since 2003\, Mr. Patterson has been the Public Works Director for the City of Pendleton. He is responsible for administrative and leadership oversight in directing work assignments\, construction and maintenance efforts\, and overall completion of projects. The Public Works Department consists of Administration & Fleet Division\, Sewer Division\, Streets Division\, and Water Division for a total of 35 employees. The annual operating budget for the Department is just over $17\,000\,000 annually\, with over $20\,000\,000 in capital projects slated for the current fiscal year. SUMMARY:Small Modular Nuclear Reactors: is nuclear in Oregon's future?
DESCRIPTION:Join Solar Oregon and hear from advocates both supportive and opposed to a new generation of nuclear tech\, and what it might mean for Oregon\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nSmall Modular Reactors (SMRs) represent a new generation of nuclear technology that promises to solve the high cost and safety concerns associated with traditional large nuclear reactors. Will they live up to their promise? Join Solar Oregon as we explore both the ups and the downs of a technology that–whether you love it or hate it–aims to be part of a carbon-free future. \nWe are joined by a special panel of experts spanning both sides of the SMR conversation: \nTom Sicilia\, PG\, is a hydrogeologist in the Nuclear Safety and Emergency Preparedness division of the Oregon Department of Energy (ODOE). His background is in investigation and remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater. Since joining ODOE in 2018\, he has been following developments in the nuclear energy sector. While his primary focus area is activities at the Hanford site\, he is also become a resource for information on Small Modular Reactors. \nEmma Redfoot is a board member and outreach specialist for Mothers for Nuclear\, an organization focused on engaging in a dialogue surrounding the importance of nuclear energy as part of protecting nature for current and future generations. She has a BA in Environmental Studies from Lewis and Clark College and an MS in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Idaho. Emma supports nuclear energy due to the environmental and social benefits it provides as an emissions free source of electricity that has been one of the major tools for rapid decarbonization around the world. She supports nuclear and renewable energy sources working together to provide clean\, reliable\, and affordable electricity to meet the intertwined challenges of climate change and energy accessibility. \nDamon Motz-Storey leads Oregon PSR’s Healthy Climate Program advocating for a just transition from fossil fuels and nuclear power to clean\, renewable energy. Damon coordinates Oregon PSR’s climate and environmental lobbying efforts to ensure that public health and safety are well-considered by policy makers at the local\, state\, and federal levels. Damon has been with Oregon PSR since 2016 and enjoys cooking\, singing\, and cycling around the city of Portland.

DESCRIPTION:Energy resilience centers provide refuge and critical services for communities and businesses when disaster strikes. In the face of devastating wildfires\, Cascadia seismic hazard\, and other disruptive grid hazards\, many communities in Oregon are exploring energy resilience centers as an essential infrastructure to safeguard lives and livelihoods. \nSolar Oregon is thrilled to be joined by two prominent experts who have helped communities across the country adopt energy resilience centers. Please join this free webinar and learn how your community can take the first step toward disaster preparedness. \nGeoff Oxnam is a microgrid project developer and former utility executive with more than two decades of experience in energy\, utilities\, telecommunications and infrastructure. He has managed strategic planning\, operations\, marketing and communications efforts for those industries and environmental organizations. Geoff founded American Microgrid Solutions in 2016 and has grown the company through dozens of microgrid analyses and development projects in 18 states and territories. He earned a BA in History from Williams College and an MBA from The Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan appointed Geoff to chair the Maryland Clean Energy Center board of directors. \nSeth Mullendore is vice president and project director for Clean Energy Group\, overseeing projects ranging from customer-sited solar and battery storage to the replacement of power plants with clean technologies. Seth works with policy makers\, project developers\, industry\, advocates\, and community and environmental justice groups to advance clean energy policies and projects\, with a focus on achieving greater access to solar and battery storage technologies for disadvantaged communities. Much of his work pertains to the research and reporting of energy storage technologies\, policies\, and supporting market structures. Prior to joining Clean Energy Group\, Seth served as a Sustainable Energy Fellow with Union of Concerned Scientists and worked with Maine Clean Communities to help advance clean transportation initiatives.
